  1. This sounds like a great idea! Hygiene is essential for good self-esteem, among other things.

You might want to check with the Reno, NV school district’s homeless liaison. They’ve worked on this issue and have come up with some pretty impressive efforts.

The challenges (you’ve probably considered)…privacy, adequate supervision, maintaining “secrecy” so kids aren’t outed as homeless because they participate. Clean clothes are also an issue, especially undergarments.

I’m glad you good folks have been thinking and acting on the challenges facing Sarasota (I lived there as a child, so I feel an attachment). Let me know if I can help.

Take a look at my website, and click on the My Own Four Walls trailer to hear from kids about what they’re going through trying to get an education.

    1. Diane, Thanks for the input. Indeed, I have considered the challenges you mention. I hear it all the time, “You can’t do that, because…”. It’s a very convenient excuse for doing nothing, but I don’t buy it. Everything can be abused, but that doesn’t mean it will be. Opponents will say “We need to protect the kids”, but what they really mean is, “No homeless kids in my neighborhood”. We’ve even heard here in Sarasota, that we shouldn’t build a downtown homeless shelter because of the proximity to electric and natural gas infrastructure. Homeland Security! And every day more people fall between the cracks. Well, it’s time somebody stood up to the politics of fear and said “You’re too paranoid to do it, OK, I will”. That’s our credo at Get Ready 4 School. No ID required. No questions asked. No pledges or prayers. Just FREE, CLEAN FACILITIES.

  2. Jeff, I hope you are still involved with this…
We last spoke on St. John and I was happy to hear this idea take shape.
    Blessings.
